MENTONE MEETING. HEROS WINS TRIAL STAKES. MELBOURNE, February 27. The Newmarket Trial Stakes, the principal race at the Mentone Turf Club s meeting to-day, was won by Heros, who ran third in the Oakleigh Plate on February 16 and deail-hcated with Synagogue in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes last Saturday. Result: — NEWMARKET TRIAL STAKES of £200. Sis furlongs. HEROS, b g, by Heorie—Loversland (Mrs. L. It. Buxton), 9.3 .. . . 3 LA SCALA - EPIGRAM (N.Z.-bred), 7.11 3 Closing Time and Radiant Star were scratched. E. Clarke was suspended for two months for crossing the field too sharply in the Two-year-old Handicap at Mentone. For allegedly unseemly conduct at Caulfield last Saturday the owner-trainer W. Smart, whose horse Phenomenon ran a close third to Closing Time and Veilantif in the first division of the Hawksburn Handicap, has been disqualified until the end of the season. H. Skidmore has been engaged to ride Hall Mark in the Essendon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. When the announcement was made F. Dempsey said he was surprised and disappointed. The j owner, Mr. C. B. Kellow, said lie considered Dempsey displayed poor judgment when Hall Mark was beaten by Kerndale in the St. George Stakes at Caulfield on February 16. The prominent juvenile Young Idea is causing anxiety, and may have to miss the Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington. Theresa Oamba is being sent to Sydney to race at Eastern meetings. J. Williams, who rode Grace Darling to victory in the Caulfield Cup in 1885, and trained the 1921 Melbourne Cup winner Sister Olive, died last night.
