CIVIL ENGINEERS.

SOCIETY'S CONFERENCE. VISITS TO CITY WORKS. The twenty-first annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers was continued to-day, when two interesting papers were read by members at the Auckland University College this morning. The president, Mr. D. Holderness, presided.

Mr. L. B. Hutton read a paper on "Lightning and Distribution Systems," and Mr. A. D. Mead, city waterworks engineer, on "The Submerged Pipe Line Crossing Auckland Harbour for the Birkenhead Water Supply." ■ Members discussed the papers after they had been read.

This afternoon visits were paid to the IYA broadcasting station, and to a pipe manufacturing factory in Mount Albert. This evening Mr. Holderness will deliver his presidential address. To-morrow and Saturday further visits will be paid to engineering works round Auckland.
