GRAIN AND PRODUCE.
MOST LINES DEARER. GOOD DEMAND FOR SEEDS. Most lines in the grain and produce markets show a firming tendency, largely due to the unfavourable crop conditions in the South during the growing period. Fowl wheat is extremely linn, and Southern quotations are steadily advancing, with occasional increments of Vzd per bushel. The harvest is well below the average, and it is now apparent that those who looked for an easing in values of fowl wheat when the new crop came on the market are doomed to disappointment. Meanwhile, local rates are unaltered, but further advances may be expected. The maize market, apparently in sympathy with wheat, has a tinner tone. Gisborne quotations have advanced, and the local rate has moved up a penny, and is now 4/8 per bushel through store. The firmness of the Southern oats market is also reflected in local quotations. B Gartons are unaltered at J/6, but clipped Gartous have been raised to 4/d and Algerian seed to 4/9. Chaff is selling freely at £7 10/ to £7 12/6 per ton. , , There is still a fairly heavy demand for pollard, but the advent of warm rains has cased the inquiry for bran. Australian pollard, for which some consumers show a decided preference, is selling freely as the Sydney price has allowed regular importations to be made during the period in which local mills' supplies were short. _ Merchants are finding a difficulty in securing regular supplies of good quality potatoes. The best arc coining from the Manawatu, but even from this source, the standard varies considerably. The digging of the second Pukekohe crop lias been delayyed by wet conditions, and will be commenced as soon as the weather becomes more settled. The city requirements of onions are now coming forward chiefly from Canterbury, with the addition of a smaller proportion of locals. The price of Southern is unaltered at 11/6 per cental. Merchants report a keen demand for grass seeds, and, in view of the weather conditions, most orders are for urgent delivery. Inquiries are commencing to come forward for fertilisers for autumn dressing.
