WATER POLO.
REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. DH. PETTIT RESIGNS. CONTROL BOARD'S PROGRAMME. Mr. Trevor McCarthy presided at last night's meeting -of the Auckland Water Polo Control Board, at which, a letter was read from Dr. T. H. Pettit, who stated that ' he' had tendered to the Auckland Swimming Centre his resignation as a member and chairman of the Auckland Water Polo Referees' Association. He expressed his willingness to appear before the centre and give reasons for his resignation. This action was, stated the chairman, apparently the outcome of Dr. Pettit's dissatisfaction with the ailocation of games played in the New Zealand championship tournament last week. When the draw was arranged, Mr. R. J. Upson, as convener of referees, was given the right to choose the two games he wished to control, and he selected those between Canterbury and the Auckland A and B teams. Dr. Pettit and another referee, Mr. Len Brighton, were then given the games in which the Wellington team Was playing. Wellington, however, was below strength, and was not considered to be in the championship. Dr. Pettit, therefore, asked to be placed in charge of the match between Auckland A and Canterbury. Mr. Upson declined to forego his right to this match, and members of the board shared the opinion that no change ehould be made in the arrangements. It was decided to receive Dr. Pettit's letter. Mr. McCarthy said that When the resignation was considered the Auckland Swimming Centre would refer it to the board.
The coach of the Ponsonby Club's senior team, Mr. S. Brooking, appealed for more games in the A grade. As players were not having enough games it was difficult to keep teams together, the standard had declined and junior players had no incentive to become seniors.
After the meeting Dr. Pettit informed a Prese representative that his resignation had no reference to the matter mentioned by Mr. Upsoa, but was caused by circumstances related to the swimming centre, and not the Water Polo Board.
