PLUNKET SHIELD.
OTAGO 348 AHEAD. STILL 3 WICKETS IN HAND. TAI/BOT IN SPARKLING FORM. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. An easy wicket favoured Otago on resumption of play this morning in the Plunket Shield match against Canterbury. Butterfleld had his first bowl in the match when he opeued to Talbot (40), who helped himself to eight runs off the first over, including a sparkling pull to the boundary. Graham took' up the running at the other end, but both batsmen faced him confidently. Talbot reached 55 in 01 minutes by scoring his second six, lifting Butterliekl, a graceful shot, over the long-on boundary. This was the fifth six of the match. Page persisted with Butterfield, who met success when Toomey snicked a rising off ball to Roberts at first slip, the fieldsman taking a brilliant onehanded catch. 137 —4 —5. Elmes gave Cronib, at point, an easy catch off Butterfield'e next delivery, but the ball rolled down the fieldman's legs. In Graham's next over Elmes gave what appeared to be. another chance, this time to Jackman, behind the wickets. After a desultory -period 130 came up for 130 minutes' play, both Elmes and Talbot opening their shoulders and notching several good fours. Tal'bot'a sparkling exhibition ended when he put his foot in front of a ball from Butterfield, which appeared to be going away. 160 —r> —09. Elmos hoisted ."50 in even time by sweeping Bellamy to the square-leg boundary and a couple to the on-side fence. Chettleburgh, who had been having a quiet time, appreciated Cromb's slows by running into double figures. At 12.11 p,Tn. a. heavy drizzle eent the players scampering into the pavilion, but the adjournment lasted only eight minutes. A bye brought 200 up in 163 minutes, compared to Canterbury's 141 in 231 minutes.
Elmes, who was playing a. vigorous innings, reached his half-century in ae many minutes, with a beautiful drive off Graham, but in the same over O'Brien took a brilliant catch at deep square-leg. Rimes' ecorc included ten boundaries. 216—6—52. Cav.inagh came next, but threw his wicket way by stepping out to a shortpitched ball. 217 —7 —2.
