CANTERBURY MARKETS.

EASING IN POTATO PRICES.

CHRISTCHURCH, Friday.

The absence of North Island inquiries, and rains which have fallen in most parts of Canterbury, have had the effect of easing the potato market. The f.0.b., sacks included, value to-day is £5 5/ a ton, or £4 a ton on trucks. Some farmers have sold a small proportion of their crops at from £4 to £4 5/ a ton.

The onion market 19 also a shade easier, f.0.b., sacks included, quotations being £7 10/ to £7 15/ a ton. The oats market is very firm, with further hardening in prices. A Gartons are worth up- to 3/ a bushel f.0.b., sacks included, and B's 2/8 to 2/9 a bushel. Offers to growers are 2/4 to 2/5 a bushel for A's, and up to 2/1 for B'e. Good Algerians are worth 2/ a bushel on trucks. Few Duns are offered, but some business has been done at up to 2/3 a bushel on trucks.

Fowl wheat is very firm. Prompt delivery is worth 4/4 f.0.b., sacks excluded, and spread from 4/5% to 4/6.

There is a normal trade inquiry for email seeds at this period of the year, a iiiir amount of inquiry coming from the North Island. All markets are firm, Akaroa cocksfoot has sold as high as lid a bushel on trucks for heavy seed, and a halfpenny less for plains. Little of the latter, however, is left in farmers' hands. Ryegrass is also tending to firm, 3/ a bushel being readily available on trucks for good seed, with pome business reported at 3/3 a bushel. White clover is in heavy supply, and is practically the onlv seed for which there is not an active demand. It is quoted at from 7d to 9d a lb. A sample or two of red clover have been offered to merchants, and quotations are l lOd to lid a lb. I
