TREND OF TRADE.
BUSY AT CHRISTMAS. EASING OFF LAST MONTH. The latest "Abstract of Statistics" furnishes particulars of bank debits, or the total amount debited to all accounts (excluding Government) by the trading banks during each week. The average weekly debits during each month are as follow:—
These figures give , a a fair idea of the volume of business done generally. They indicate'the quieter 6tate of trade during the winter and early spring, when exports are low and internal trade is quieter, and the greater activity in the summer time and the flush of the export, season.
It was generally considered that business last Christmas was. well ahead of that recorded in recent years, and this 's confirmed in the December banking figures. ........
For the week ended December 24 the ! total debits shown were over £21,000,000. Under the circumstances it is not surprising that the decline which regularly takes place in January was unusually sharp for the first three weeks of last month. ' .
