PLUNKET SHIELD.

OTAGO BATSMEN FAIL

BADCOCK SUPERLATIVE.

A SPLENDID CENTURY.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, Saturday.

After an hour's delay Badcock and Saxton opened for Otago against Canterbury to-day in the final Plunket Shield game. The wicket rolled out well, but was rather soft. Under bright sunshine, however, it was drying fast. The outfield was slow.

Roberts and Andrews opened the howling, and in Roberts' second over Badcock sweetly square cut him to the boundary. In the next over from Andrews the coach lifted the ball clean over the leg fence for six. Andrews narrowly missed Badeock's wicket soon afterwards when the ball swung and came back. Roberts, who was pitching them short, was replaced by Graham after four overs and took command at the other end. Saxton (3) leg glanced his first delivery for four, and the next hall he-snicked to Bellamy at first slip, who failed to hold an easy catch. Roberts was now bowling a better length and troubling Saxton on the off through the batsman failing to get his foot across to the ball Badcock brought 40 up by forcing Roberts through the leg boundary, and added a similar amount by snicking one on the leg side.

Graham was maintaining an immaculate length, and only three singles were taken off five overs. He then gave the hall to Bellamy, but Badcock brought 50 up by square-cutting the first ball to- the fence, and tho same over sent one sizzling to the leg boundary, bringing his total to 40. Badcock continued to bat freely and 00 came up in 45 minutes. His half-century came up in even time. Saxton continued to have several narrow escapes through faulty footwork, but Badcock was batting in brilliant style and rattling off-drives brought 70 up at the luncheon adjournment when Badcock was 62 and Saxton 11. There were 6 extras. An Exhilarating Display. Badcock continued his display of exhilarating batting on resumption and entered into the seventies by pulling Roberts to the square leg pickets, and while facing Andrews he showed a variety of pretty run-getting strokes. Saxton was content to remain subdued in striking contrast to his partner. Badcock brought 100 up by pulling Roberts to the boundary, the century having taken 75 minutes.

When the partnership ended with 104 on the board Saxton had scored only 15, but his effort was of far greater value than his figures indicated. Badcock continued.to play with complete assurance, and it was not until ho had scored 136 in 138 minutes that Roberts bowled him. It was the best innings that Badcock has played in Otago. He hit 15 fours and a six in his chanceless display.

Uttley, Talbot and Elmes failed to do themselves justice and their rapid dismissal brought about a sudden change in Otago's position. Apart from Badcock, Chettleburg was the only batsman to make a score, and he was undefeated, with a toal of 35, but he, too, failed to display his usual 'certainty. .';." Graham"Takes Five Wickets, Under the conditions Canterbury eould have had no great expectations of their bowlers, and as a whole the attack was not difficult. Graham was the most impressive, and his medium-paced deliveries gained him five wickets at a cost of 76 runs, a very good performance •under the conditions. The Canterbury batsmen, during their hour at the wickets, gave a drab. display. Scores:—OTAGO.—First Innings. In - recognition of his record-making feat in the Auckland-Wellington Plunket Shield match, the Auckland Cricket Association'' oh Saturday at Eden Park presented Paul Whitelaw, skipper of Parnell, with the, ball used in the match mounted with silver and suitably inscribed. Making the presentation, which was made at .afternoon tea, Mr. P.. Earl, president of the association, referred to the fact that Whitelaw had made 115 in the first innings and .155 in the second, thus making a record for Plunket Shield cricket. To make a double century in any high-class cricket was an achievement, but to do it in Plunket Shield cricket was outstanding. Mr. Earl heartily congratulated Whitelaw, and hoped that he would repeat his performance in the next shield series. If he could repeat it when he opened for New Zealand at Lord's in 1937 against England, it was up to the Auckland cricketers to erect a statue to him at' Eden Park. ONEHUNGA; ASSOCIATION.
