RACING AT TE AROHA.

THE OPENING DAY. MUNGATOON WINS CHIEF EVENT. CHAMPION HACK TO SIR ABB. The Tc Aroha Jockey Club's annual meeting opened on Saturday, and some excellent racing was witnessed. The chief event, the Herries Memorial Cup, -was ■won by Mungatoon, and Sir Abb beat a strong field in the Champion Hack Handicap. Carrying top weight, 9.0, Gay Blonde put up a first-class performance in winning the Waihou Handicap. The totalisator investments during the day amounted to £26,100 10/, against £25,620 10/ for the first day last year, an increase of £471. Surprise in Herries MemoriaL Gay Blonde was withdrawn from th* Herries Memorial Cup, and in a good betting race Kelly, Prince Colossus and FerserTwere in most demand. As they passed the stand Sinking Fund had charge from Knight of Australia, Kelly, Mungatoon, Royal Artist, Caliente, Aiguille, Fersen and Aga Khan. Kelly followed Sinking Fund along the back, the pair being attended by Knight of Australia, Prince Colossus, Caliente, Royal .Artist, Mungatoon and Fersen. Sinking Fund and Kelly led Caliente across the top, the trio being followed by Prince Colossus and Knight of Australia, with Aiguille, Fersen,'Aga Khan and. Mungatoon next. Sinking Fund was first into the straight,, with Kelly handy, then came Prince Colossus, Knight of Australia, Caliente, with Mungatoon moving up fast. The last named stayed on best over the last furlong, and got the verdict by half a length from Sinking Fund, who beat Prince Colossus by three-quarters of a length. Fersen was fourth, followed by Aga Khan, Knight of Australia, Aiguille, Caliente, Kelly and Royal Artist. The Shaftesbury. When the field paraded for r*e Shaftesbury Handicap, Scotch Astarth and Tybalt were missing. Gipsy Moth and Miss Lorraine were the best backed, and they finished as named, with Tray Bit in third place. Queen Nona led early from Miss Lorraine, Gipsy Moth, King Brierly and Keith Lu, the order across the top being Queen Nona, Wahine Reihi, King Brierly, Miss Lorraine and Gipsy Moth. Wahine Reihi, Queen Nona and Miss Lorraine were on terms turning for home, with King. Brierly and Gipsy Moth close up. The last-named finished on best, to beat Miss Lorraine by a neck, with Tray Bit, who finished fast, two lengths further back. Wahine Reihi, Queen Nona, Ballymoney and King Brierly were next. Gay Blonde Wins Sprint. Coronis and Exaggeration were the defections in the Waihou Handicap, the open sprint event, in which Gay Blonde was a staunch favourite, while Star Artist and Lucidus had plenty of supporters. Greek Gold, Scotland, Sirona and Gay Lap began best, and across the top the order was Scotland, Gay Lap, British Columbia, Greek Gold and Gay Blonde, with Star Artist, Tai Ao and Sirona following. The order was the same into the straight, where Gay Blonde came through to win by half a length from Greek Gold, with Scotland a neck away. Lucidus, Tai Ao, British Columbia, Star Artist, Gay Lap and Sirona were next. Champion Hack Event. Sixteen candidates went to the post in the Champion Hack Handicap, and when the final figures were adjusted most money was invested on Barn Dance, On Parade and King Musk, while Sir Abb, the winner, was also well backed. - Beau Gallante led out • - from Kurap'ae, Scotch Nation and Sir Abb, with Nun Nicer, King Musk and Barn

Dance close up. Kurapae led along the back,, with Gay - Rose, Beau Gallante, Nun Nicer, Pango and Dark Marble next; then came Sir Abb, Scotch Nation, On Parade 'and First' Lap. King Musk followed Kurapae across the top, and they were attended by Gay Rose, Pango, Scotch Nation, Nun Nicer, Sir Abb, Dark Marble and Barn Dance. At the home turn Kurapae was followed by King Musk, Gay Rose and Sir Abb, with Pango, Barn Dance and Dark Marble all handy. Sir Abb challenged strongly over the final stages, and got up to win by three-quarters of a length from Dark Marble, who beat On Parade by a length and a half. Next to finish were.Nun Nicer, Gay Rose, Grand Talk, King Rey, First Lap and Bonnie Gay.

Whakapara at Xast. Baroscope and Sirona dropped out of the Hot Springs Handicap, and Matorni and Prolyxo carried the bulk of the money, but Whakapara, the outsider of the field, beat Matorni by a head. Trishna was, first out from Whakapara and Matorni, and the order along the back was Trishna, Matorni, King Mestor, Whakapara, Gay Broney and Prolyxo. Trishna turned for home ahead of Whakapara, King Mestor, Matorni and Gay Broney, and in a close finish Matorni came through between Trishnaand Whakapara, but failed to reach the latter by a head, with Gay Broney a similar distance away. Protest Dismissed. After the conclusion of the Shaftsbury Handicap, Mr. A. S. Horsley, owner of Miss Lorraine, who ran second to Gipsy Moth in that event, entered a protest against Gipsy Moth for crossing Miss Lorraine in the straight. After hearing the evidence of H. Wiggins, rider of Miss Lorraine, and W. J. Broughton, rider of Gipsy Moth, the stewards came to the conclusion that the interference was due to H. Wiggins trying to force his mount between the leaders ana Gipsy Moth, and they decided to dismiss the protest. Later results are: — HERRIES MEMORIAL CUP HANDICAP of £500.
