WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

ELLERSLIE. The first meeting for this year of the Ellerslie Institute was well attended. Mrs. Bennet, J.P., a member of the Auckland Centre, gave a talk on the .Maori woman of the past. Mrs. Gasparish sang Maori songs, and Mrs. Tippit also sang. Mrs. Parsons, president, presided. KARIOI. A well attended meeting of the Kanoi Women's Institute was held on Wednesday, Mrs. Strachan presiding. The competition for best made scones was won by Mrs. Strachan, Mrs. Carter being second and Mrs. Malpas third. The roll call, "Our Holiday Experiences," proved very amusing. Mrs. J. Sennitt was fortunate in finding the prize in the treasure hunt. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Bates and Mrs. Harrison. WAIKATO. Te Uku Women's Institute held their monthly meeting recently, Mrs. Cogswell presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs. Sewell, of Te Kauwhata, gave a demonstration on drying fruit of different kinds. Mrs. Sewell gave a very delightful musical recital, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Roll of honour competitions resulted: Cold sweet, Mrs. Kempster, 1, Miss Myrtle Sutton, 2; institute potatoes, Mrs. Gardner 1, Mrs. Cogswell 2. Juniors, cold sweet: Miss P. Death I. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Coate, Death, and Misses Lofroth and C. and P. Death. UTIKU. The usual monthly meeting of the Utiku Women's Institute was held last week. Mrs. Dellow presided over a fair attendance of members and visitors. The motto for the month was given by the president, "It takes a hundred of men for an encampment, but it takes a woman to make a home." During the afternooon Mrs. Randolph sang a song, and Misses Prime and Jackson gave a pianoforte duet. A talk was

given by Mrs. Milieu, president of the Wanganui Federation, explaining various matters to members. Mrs. Smith demonstrated rug making. The competition for the best sponge resulted as follows: Mesdames Jackson and Dellow 1, Mesdames Pragnell and Smith 2, Mesdames Jurgens and Withinngton 3. Afternoon tea was handed round by the hostesses, Mesdames Martin, Wilson, Misses Fannin, J. Jackson, D. Newland.
