WANGANUI ESCAPES.
LITTLE DAMAGE REPORTED MEN CAPSIZED IN BOAT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WAINGANUI, this day. '
The flood in the Wanganui River is now subsiding. At its highest point yesterday it was several feet lower than the record of 1904.
Large quantities of driftwood and other debris were carried out to sea, and a number of boats were swept away. Apart from that, little of note occurred. Three men had a narrow escape when trying to salvage a-launch which was adrift. Their boat crashed against a cylinder and capsized, but the men scrambled on to a bridge. The launch was subsequently towed ashore lower down stream, considerably damaged. _
Alarmist anticipations that the flood would reach serious dimensions were not realised, and practically no local damage has been reported. The weather is now clearing.
The Wanganui River roads are still blocked by slips.
