The C'unard liner Franconia arrived tlii<* morning from Suva, berthing at the Prince's wharf. She is on route from New York with 225 -tourists. This smart 20,000-tonnev was open for inspection this afternoon, and was well patronised. A regular monthly service between Auckland and Nukualofa, Ton fa, has been arranged by the Union Company, which has chartered the Port Whangarei for the run. She will make her first ■ departure next Friday. The Mariposa sailed at 8.20 last evening in continuation of her run from San Francisco to Sydney. She took 30-3 passengers from Auckland.

Competitors in this season's grain race from Australia to Britain will number ;wenty—only one of which is a full-rigged 'hip. The steamer James Cook, formerly the Norwegian freighter Belfri (2110 tons), vliicli is to enter the Sydney-New Zealand i 111 her service, arrived at Melbourne from \ewcastle-on-Tyne on January 30 last. Iler mtward voyage occupied 07 days, several icavy storms being encountered on the •oyage. She is owned by Mr. 11. C. Sleigh, if Melbourne.
