OVERDUE RATES.
PROBLEM ON EAST COAST. LIABILITIES OF MAORIS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. The native legislation to be introduced during the present session of Parliament will not deal with the question of Maori rates, according to a statement made at the meeting of the Waiapu County Council. In reply to the council's inquiry the Minister of Native Affairs wrote stating that it was extremely unlikely that the proposed legislation would deal with the collection of rates on native lands, and this advice was supplemented by a statement of the chairman, Mr. 1). W. W. Williams, that Mr. Forbes had informed him definitely that the matter was not being dealt with during the special session, but that it would be kept in mind.
The council decided, in view of the difficulty of collecting outstanding rates, that all rates, whether owing by Maoris or Europeans, should be sued for as soon as tliev became overdue.
