MORE WORK.
RELIEF WORKERS' REQUEST. CITY COUNCIL'S REGRET. In a letter to the City Council received last evening 20 subsidised relief workers engaged on drainage work in the city asked that men engaged on their class of work be given an extra day's work weekly. The* city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, said that the drainage work which had been carried out during the past two years was undertaken for the purpose of providing additional pay for a number of relief workers. Only those employed on the 1933 relief of unemployment loan were granted the extra day in addition to the standard ratee of pay, and in view of the fact that the loan proposals recently decided by the ratepayers did not provide for an additional day's work and that the Tamaki drainage works would be finished in four months' time, he did not think it would be wise to grant the request. It was decided to reply that the council regretted no provision had been made in this year's estimates to give an extra day's work to the. men concerned.
