ARCHBISHOP AVERILL.
. j . Yesterday's services at St. Mary' ; s were a proof of affection for Archbishop Averill and a, tribute to his Church leadership, as well as a commemoration of his episcopal jubilee. By all sections of the'community,he is held in high esteem. Through the recent difficult years, as in the trying perio'd the war, the people have been stimulated by the force and directness of his message and by his' courage in the facing of problems. Endowed with much vigour of mind and body, he has not spared himself in the fulfilment of the duties of his high office, and the example of his own life adds emphasis to his appeal for a higher sense of duty. It was his conception of duty that led him last October to postpone his retirement from office. Auckland has been fortunate in having had him as a leader for so long, and in a country"notable, for length of service among those in high office in the Church he holds a prominent place.
