A KING " ARRESTED."

A quotation from the "Hereford Journal" of June IG, 1824, illustrates the difference between news treatment then and now. Tucked away in the middle of a column, without even a heading, was a report of a fire at a Royal Palace: —

"On Tuesday night an alarming fire broke out in Carlton Palace, and at the time it was discovered apprehensions were entertained for the safety of the splendid mansion. His Majesty and suite had arrived about half-past ten from Windsor, and in twenty minutes after it was perceived a sitting-room adjoining the Great Hall was in flames. The most active measures, in which the King bore a part, were instantly adopted to subdue the flames, and with the assistance of the engines which arrived the fire was quickly extinguished. On Wednesday His Majesty, in a travelling cap, went to see the room that had been on fire, when he was taken into custody by a watchman, of St. James* Street, whose language and manner 011 the occasion intimated pretty plainly that he thought His Majesty had coine for 110 good purpose! The King was highly amused with this adventure."
