THE HAPPIEST ACTOR.
The happiest actor on Norma Shearer's "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" set, when that picture was in production, was "Flush," the two-year-old cocker spaniel appearing as Elizabeth Barrett's pet in the film of the famous stage play. White with tan markings, "Flush" was chosen by Miss Shearer from a State-wide search for a dog to fill the important role. "Flush" began accompanying his new mistress to the studio when she was filming "Riptide." Little by little he became familiar with the buzz and clamour of picture making.
Formerly called "Pop," the star taught him to answer to his new name, which, his owner declares will now be his for life. With kind treatment and constant companionship, he soon learned to adore his new mistress, which was necessary for purposes of the film. He went through similar training with other characters of the play so that his reactions to them on the screen would be an indication to their character.
"Flush" was one of the most popular members of the company, it is said. Visitors on the set, after asking for Miss Shearer, would always demand to see the dog "Flush." According to Director Sidney Franklin, "Flush" has a perfect screen face. His great eyes register more emotion than could a million words, he says. A private screening of the film was held in Auckland this week and there was enthusiastic comment on the excellence of the production.
