CROSSING SMASH.
MOTORIST'S NARROW ESCAPE
CAR WRECKED BY TRAIN,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day.
Carried half a chain by an engine when his five-seater car collided with the New Plymouth-Wanganui express yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. Boyle had a narrow escape from death at the Egmont Road crossing. He suffeied abrasions of his hands and face, and both his ankles were fractured. Mr. Bovle kept a close lookout, but the crossing is an awkward one, and lie neither heard nor saw the train until he was almost on the line. Suddenly the engine loomed up about 15 yards away Mr. Bovle attempted to jump clear of his car, but did not succeed, and he was carried with it for about halt a chain. At the cattle stop the car was smashed against the posts, which were battered. . Mr. Bovle was taken by the train to Waitara," and later removed to New Plymouth Hospital. That lie did not receive more serious injuries is probably due to the fact that the engine, approaching on liis left, struck the offside of the car, which was completely •wrecked.
