OBITUARY.
MR. W. J. PORTEOUS. The death occurred suddenly on Tuesday of Mr. William J. Porteous at the ao-e of 01 years. He was born in India, hk father then being a soldier in the 92nd Gordon Highlanders. Like his father and grandfather, lie took the Queen's shilling, and served in the 9-nu in various stations in Britain. In IS9» he embarked along with his regiment for India. The next year, 1899, trouble with the Boers in South Africa, taw the Gordons ordered there. Mr. Porteous served throughout the siege of Ladysinith and held the Queen's Medal with clasps (Elandslaagte, defence of Ladysinith, Laings Nek and Belfast), also the King's Medal with two clasps. He arrived in Auckland 29 years ago, and had been in the employ of Messrs. Warnock Bros., of Richmond, for many years, and while at work there he suddenly collapsed and passed away. He is survived by his wife, three sons and six daughters, all resident in Auckland. A brother, Robert, saw service with the Gordon Highlanders in the Great War, and is in the employment of the Auckland Transport Board.
MR. C. W. PULLMAN. [ (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Thursday. The death occurred in the Whangarei District Hospital to-day of Mr. Clarence Webb Pullman, of Matapouri, in his sixty-first year. Mr. Pullman was a son of early farming settlers in Marlborough. He came North 35 years ago to join his uncle, Mr. W. Pullman, who was farming at Matapouri. A few years later ho took up a farm on the approach to Matapouri Beach. To hundreds of campers at this spot Mr. Pullman becamc a familiar figure, and helped to solve many of the little problems which arise in camp life. For the past two years Mr. Pullman had suffered from heart trouble, and had been an inmate of the Whangarei Hospital on several occasions. Seventeen years ago he married Miss Jean i Jenkins. His wife and a family of four sons and one daughter survive him. I
