MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.

DREDGE HAND NEAR KAIHERE (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) - " PAEROA, Friday. A miraculous escape from fatal injuries was experienced yesterday by Mr. F. Cocks, of Ngatea. Mr. Cocks, who is a dredge hand in the employ of the Lands Department, at present working near Kaihere, was descending from the superstructure of the dredge after greasing when a steel pin broke a shelve, which flew out, striking him on the side and inflicting bruises. The piece of metal, which was about two feet in diameter, buried itself in the ground.

The shelve flew with great pace and just grazed Mr. Cocks' back and neck. Had his head been in a slightly different position it would almost certainly have been severed. He was brought into the Paeroa Hospital, where he will be under observation for a few days.
