WATER SUPPLIES LOW.
POSITION AROUND CAMBRIDGE
(From Our Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, Sunday. Following the few thunder showers and one short downpour over the New Year holidays, the drought conditions continue around Cambridge. Bright sunshine and high temperatures, frequently over 80 in the shade, have been the order. The lack of rain has now created a serious position. The pastures everywhere present a burnt-up appearance, and the second growth from shorn pastures is practically nil. In the rural districts water supplies are practically exhausted, and with the prospect of a continuation of the -present conditions over the present month, and possibly in February, the outlook is disturbing.
The borough is short of water, and the one spring which serves the gravitatioin supply is very low. Consumers have been warned against any excess use of the supply. Gardens and lawns are suffering, and brown rot and other pests arc taking their toll of the fruit and garden crops. A 48 hours' downpour would be a God-send at the present time.
