CHAMPION BOWLS.

THE DOMINION SINGLES ONLY FIFTEEN SURVIVORS. THREE WITH TWO-UFE CHANCES. Disaster befell most of the competitors in the singles championship yesterday afternoon, and when the full five'rounds had been played it was found that of the 77 survivors of flic :u\ who had entered upon the first day"'t< play, only 1j stiil remained in the contest. Three of these are •two-lifers,"' having rvon each round yesterday, and they wi',l have to be defeated twice before they are eliminated, and the other 12 arc "one-lifers," having already suffered one defeat It will still take about five rouirtls to find the champion for the year, and these will be iplayed next Wednesday, or as soon an they are released from the rinks and pairs. * . An unexpected feature in the results oF the day's play was the disappearance of the whole of the nine Carlton members who had survived the section play, and also the right players from the South Island, tho draw for tho sixth round showing that the 15 still in the content comprise nine from the Auckland Centre and six from other centres in the North Island.

The further the contest went yesterday, tin; clearer it became that the competition was steadily becoming more severe, and champions were meeting champions go often ns to provide stern matches, involving all the strategy and -dexterity of experienced exponents of the game. Thin makes it extremely difficult to forecast the ultimate winner, for .most of the last few matches of tho day were so close as to suggest that victory or defeat depended on who had to play the last bowl. In fact, some were still closer than that, notably the match between M. Sunde (Glen' Eden i and P. MoWhannell (Hataitai), in which the latter's last bowl slipped through between the jack and the shot bowl, lying so close together that an inch wider or narrower would have given liim a win.

The ICapier winner A. J. Engebretsen had the moral support or a large following from his province, and they saw an unusual last head. He was three up on the board, against Frank Coburn (Ponsonby, formerly of Whangarei), with tho expectation that any minute the time bell would stop play. He put. his first bowl on the jack, and Coburn drove, recognising that second shot was useless with only one head to go. However, he missed with his first, was too wide with h's second, and too narrow with his third, Engebretsen in the meantime piling two more bowls on the jack. The latter then played a block, and although Coburn got round it his drive only glanced off two of the shot bowls, without disturbing the ]iead, and Engebretsen scored the whole four.

The local two-lifer L. Russell is the present champion of St. Helier's, but is better known from his performance oi six years ago, when he followed up the championship of Remuerp. by annexing the champion of champions of the Auckland Centre. P. A. Bourke (Hawera), the other two-lifer, very favourably impressed the onlookers by his play on Monday, and those who saw him were not surprised to find him still in the contest last evening.

The draw for the sixth round is as follows (the first-named three are the only two-lifers left): Engebretsen v. Ttussell, Routley v. Sunde, Letlum v. Somervell, Coburn v. McConnell. Xcatley v.
