MR. E. H. WING RETIRES. LONG SERVICE IN AUCKLAND. A presentation of a silver tea service was made by the Auckland office stall of the Union Steam Ship Company last evening to Mr. E. H. Wing, chief passenger clerk for the company at Auckland, who will retire on superannuation on Monday after 44 years' service in the I company. The presentation was made J by .Mr. J. N. Greenland, the Auckland Lmanager, ami eulogistic reference was j made to Mr. Wing's long service and his popularity with fellow members of the stall' and the public. Mr. Wing spent his early years .in Auckland, having been born in Onehunga, but first joined the Union Company's staff in Duneclin. Alter four I yeai's and a half in the Southern office lie returned to Auckland, where he was in the freight department for three years. Following this, he was part-time assistant in the passenger department before he was appointed chief passenger clerk. The passenger work of the company was rather more comprehensive than at present wiien Mr. Wing was first associated with it. The company had vessels running in the San Francisco service, across the Tasman, to the Islands, and in addition to these overseas services was catering for ?. large coastal passenger trade. With all these services to provide for, Mr. Wing, with the assistance of only one part-time clerk, was in charge of all arrangements. The passenger work, although now coniined to fewer services, has grown to such an extent that the passenger department now has a staff of nine. Dining Mr. Wing's period of service the present liners of the company have all been launched.
