A SINGING HAWKER.
CRASHED INTO MOTOR CAR. FINED FOR DRUNKENNESS. Singing and shouting as he drove his horse and cart along city streets yesterday afternoon, James McAndrew, a hawker, was arrested by Constable Johnston last evening. This morning McAndrew appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court charged with being drunk in charge of a horse and cart, and with damaging the mudguards of a motor car. Accused at first pleaded not guilty, but later reversed his plea. Inspector G. B. Edwards said that about 5.45 last evening accused was driving along Park Road when he collided with a motor car, damaging two mudguards to the extent of £10 or £12. There were another man and a woman in the cart at the time! Two hours later accused was arrested in Wakefield Street. He was still drunk, and still driving erratically. By way of explanation, accused said his horse was a very frightened one, and shied badly. "You were not in a fit state to be in charge of any horse, let alone one that shies," said the magistrate. Accused w'as fined £2 on the drunkenness charge, and was ordered to make good the damage to the car. He was allowed 14 days to pay. He will appear again on Monday when the damage has been assessed.
