POLICE INSPECTOR.
ARRIVAL OF NEW OFFICER. MR/R.. R. J. WARD. Mr,. R. R. J. Ward, who lias been inspector of police in charge of the Wanganui district, and was recently transferred to Auckland in a similar capacity, arrived by the early express to-day, and commenced his duty later in the,-.morning.
Inspector Ward knows Auckland, well; having been, stationed, here as senior detective.: .until 1925, when he' left on promotion,. As a detective officer Mr. Ward was considered by many to be one of the best in' the' Southern hemisphere. In addition to a methodical mind, Mr. Ward brought to his job a; great capacity for work and a passion for detail. Early in his career as a. police officer these attributes'. manifested themselves, and, specialising in' detective work, he qUickly made j. a; name for 'himself, so that he can now look back on a life marked by many, iiotable achievements.. • He figured in many big murder cases, the three most "notable being, the . case of the Runanga; highwayman.: Eggers, who was hanged, .and theniurdej-s at Wellington and ' Nelson of fairly recent date, when largely as a result of his work Coats and Tarrant were convicted and later hanged.
