BOOKBINDING.
A BOOK PRESS. ARTICLE IX. (a) y The Press. ' It is essential to have a book press for binding books. A simple, press is shown. A convenient size for the press is shown in the diagram, though it may be made from the ends of a petrol - case. The end cross-pieces, which should be screwed to the main > boards, are to prevent cracking of , the main boards. Four fin bolts, not . less than Cin long, are placed at the
corners as shown. The holes in the base board should be fin in diameter, so that the bolts will be held firmly. The holes in the top board should be Jin or gin in diameter, so' that the top board may be moved up or down quite freely. When boring the holes, be very careful to hold the bit in a perfectly upright position. Pressure is applied by screwing down the nuts. <b) Bookbinding Paste. The following is a recipe for paste which is cheap and quite satisfactory. Place a large cup of water in a small saucepan, add a teaspoonful of powdered alum and bring to the boil. Put a jtablespoonful of flour in a cup and mix it to a smooth paste with cold water. When all lumps are smoothed out, stir it into the boiling water and alum, and keep on stirring till it thickens into a smooth, even mass. Remove from the fire and stir into it one teaspoonful of spirits of cloves. Store the paste in small jars and cover tightly.
