THE PETAL.

On to a cushion Of smoothest blank velvet A petal dropped softly. A petal bright orange, A petal of poppy; Dusk filled the room. The clock, ticking loudly. Went placidly onwards; No change, but a sighing Went round the room gently ; The reft poppy shuddered, The bright petal quivered, At the whisper of doom. So, in the silence And dreaming of twilight, A day that was happy. And gladsome and shining. Tn eternity's abyss Goes fluttering nnd falling To star the dim gloom. —ELSA FLAVEbh. Hawera.
