THE CHESS WORLD.

MORE LIGHTNING GAMES

CLUB TOURNAMENT.

(By H. 0.8.)

Complete arrangements have been made for the lightning tourney to be held to-night at the Auckland Chess Club's rooms, His Majesty's Arcade. If the same enthusiasm is shown as oil previous occasions there is sure to be an excellent attendance. The contest is open to nil comers, and players are handicapped on the night—that is those who are not members of the club. Club members are confined to the divisions in which they are classified for tournament play. Supper will be provided by a committee of ladv members.

The Leningrad tournament, which ended on September 2, resulted in a close' victory for Botwinnik, with 7i points out of a maximum of 11. Romanovsky and Rumin tied for second and third with 7, Rabinovitcli was fourth with (U, Kan was fifth with 0, with Euwe sixth with SJ. Kmoch, the other non-Russian player, tied for seventh and eighth with 5. Euwe, who won two, lost two (-to Rumin and Rabinovitch) and drew seven, appears to have been in poor form. There is a possibility that Botwinnik will play in the Hastings Christmas tournament. Others who have been invited to play include Flohr, Dr. Euwe and Lilienthal. * Gallant Fight. (a) Rather tame. 2. P to K;1, Kt to Q4 ; 3. I* to Q4 gives more chances. (b) P to QB4 is a frequently played alternative. (c) 1' to KR3 should first have been played. Now,, in parrying the attack on his Queen's pawn, lie has to allow his King's side to be damaged. (d) White has driven back the attack, but has the inferior pawn position. In addition. l\is Bishop lias less mobility than Black's Knight. (el This sacrifice of a pawn in order to free his Bishop was his best chance. (f) It would not have been good to play to recover the Pawn, e.g., 30. B takes Kt, K takes B; 40. P takes P, P takes I' : 41. K takes P, It (R sq) to QB sq : 42. A correspondent sends an interesting chess puzzle from an old magazine. According to this, a novices' game on a torn scrap of paper is given as follows :— White. 1. P —KB3 1. 2. K—B2 2. 3. K—lCt3 3. 4. K—R4 4. Checkmate. A o/cer game, even for novices, but the puzzle is to find the missing moves leading to mate on move 4 by Black player. The solution is that Black lias' King and Queen on incorrect squares, and moves 1. P—KB4. 2. Kt—KBS. 3. P—Bs cli. 4. Q —l!4, mate. While not permissible under present laws of chess (B.C.P. 1931), article 12 (i), page 14. Annulled Games, under the old laws such a game would-have been valid, and is certainly a curiosity.
