N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIPS. PERRY AND HUGHES BEATEN. HOPMAN - MAIER WIN DOUBLES. SYDNEY, November 30. A surprise in the New South Wales lawn tennis championships to-day was the defeated of Perry and Hughes (Britain; in the doubles. The courts were slowafter overnight rain and a blustery wind made conditions difficult. Results:— MEN'S DOUBLES. Semi-finals. Crawford and McGrath defeated Kirby (South Africa) and Quist, 6—3, 10 —12, G —4, 6—4. Hopman and Maier (Spain) defeated Perry and Hughes (Britain), 6—B, 3—G, 10 —8, 6 —3, o—4. WOMEN'S DOUBLES. Semi-finals. . Misses Dearman and Lyle (Britain) defeated Misses Hartigan and Bickerton, 6—4, 6—o. Miss Round (Britain) and Mrs. Hopman defeated Mrs. Westacott and Mrs. Molesworth, o—4, o—l.0 —1. MIXED DOUBLES. Semi-finals. Perry and Miss Round (Britain) defeated Kirby (South Africa) and Miss Lyle (Britain), 6—4, o—4. Hopman and Mrs. Hopman defeated Menzel (Czecho-Slovakia) and Miss Bickerton, o—4, 6—4. Perry and Hughes, after winning the first and second sets, led 5—3 and 30—love in the third set. Perry was foot-faulted in this game, and his play appeared to suffer until the end of the set, which Hopman and Maier *-'nn after a grand fight. The Englishmen s volleying in the fourth set was ineffective, so they resorted to tossing, but the volleying and smashing of Hopman and Maier was irresistible.
