DWELLING RAZED.
DRURY STATION HOUSE.
TELEPHONES INTERRUPTED.
Yesterday afternoon the stationmaster's house at Drury was burnt to the ground. Mr. C. Cleverly, the stationmaster, with Mrs. Cleverly, was having a late lunch when he heard a crackling noise in the front of the house. It was found that the front of the building was afire, and the occupants had to make a hurried exit. Very little was saved. Some of the railwaymen on duty close by helped in an attempt to save the house by pouring water through an opening in the roof, but the efforts were fruitless. As a- result of the fire the telephone cables which pass over the house were made useless, and this put out of commission. several telephone circuits, including Hamilton, Tuakau, Pukekolie and Waiuku. Mr. S. Smith, the officer in chargc of the telephone lines at Papakura, was soon on the spot, and by the late afternoon had the connections reestablished. The house belonged to the Railway Department, and was insured by the Department itself.
