OPIUM IN POCKET.
MINIMUM PINE OF £25. When arrested on warrant 011 another charge early on the morning of November 20 by Detective Brady, a Chinese laundryman, Stanley Home, aged 44, was found to have a small tin containing opium "seconds" in his pocket. Home appeared on summons in the Police Court yesterday, when he pleaded guilty to the charge of having prepared opium in his possession. Senior Detective Hall said that judging' by Home's list of previous conviotions he was a confirmed opium addict. Mr. J. J. Sullivan, who appeared for the Chinese, said Home suffered from bad eyes. His eyes were so painful that lie had been smoking opium to relieve the pain. The opium had been used several times. "This client of mine has been most unfortunate recently, and has been put to a lot of trouble and expense," said counsel. "Two charges which were brought against him were both dismissed. There is a minimum penalty of £25 under the Dangerous Drugs Act, which your Worship must impose. I would ask that you do not make the penalty greater." Home was fined £25, and was allowed time in which to pay.
