"Jersey, Guernsey, Aldcrney and Sarl(" —so rue learned ihe names of the Channel Islands when rve went to school, and the list has stuck in our minds. These islands, which lie nearer to France than to England, formed part of the old duchy of Normandy, and since J 066 have adhered to the British Crown. They arc rich in historical interest; their climate is sunny and mild; and they have a special attraction as a place of residence for English people of independent means' in that they arc not subjected to English taxation and local taxes arc light. Of our illustrations, thai on the top left shows Government House, Guernsey; then come the entrance to the home of the owner of the island of Sarfy, and part of ihe garden of Mr. Complon Mackenzie, the well-known novelist, on one of ihe smaller islands; and below, from left to right, ihe owner's home, Sark, an old wine press, and a study in reflections.
