Steve Hamas, new crown prince of tlie heavy-weight division, sought a tit:. , match on October C with champion Maxie Baer. He eliminated another outstanding contender, Art Lasky, of Minneapolis, the previous night. Hamas, former college grid hero. narrowly escaped elimination himself three times hefore he won the split tenround decision over the tall, angular mid-westerner in their bout at Madison Square Garden. Nearly 13,000 fans, attending Unofficial opening of the metropolitan indoor boxing season, saw Hamas come hack three times from the verge of ;i knockout. He was still groggy in his corner when the two judges disagreed and referee Billy Cavanaugli awarded him the decision.
