A FIJIAN THREAT.
Penal Duties on Australian Imports. CONCERN AT CANBERRA.^ CANBERRA, October 24. The Federal Government is much concerned over the action of the Fiji Government in threatening to impose penal duties on Australian goods, and the Customs Department is preparing a report for the Ministry's guidance in regard to reciprocal trade with Fiji. Australian purchases from Fiji are valued at only £30,000 a year, while the Fijian market is worth £283,000 to Australia. Bananas brought from Fiji to Australia yield only about 1/ a case profit after taxes, primage and landing costs have been levied.
