Tho Kaimanawa was built at Flensburg, Germany, in 1909, and was originally named John Heidmann. She is a vessel of 2410 tons, with a length of 320 ft and 40ft beam. On coming into the hands of the Union Company she was engaged in the intercolonial trade between Newcastle and New Zealand. She was then in the New Zealand coastal trade. Since the middle of 1931 she has been laid up in Auckland Harbour.
