Great Finish in Normanby

Handicap

Ten started in the Normanby Handicap, and when backers got busy they elected Gipsy Moth a hot favourite with £017, while King Brierly (£299) and Canopy (£279) also carried strong support. From a good dispatch King Brierly, Gipsy Moth, Knrapae and Canopy were first out, and King Brierly, Gipsy Moth and Killadar were on terms along the back from Canopy, Musquil, Knrapae, Glenhaupo, Courthaven, First Lap and King Tut. Gipsy Moth headed King Brierly across the top, followed by Killadar, Canopy, Musquil and Kurapae. Gipsy Moth led into the straight from King Brierly, Killadar, Canopy, Musquil and Courthaven, but half-way down the running King Brierly headed "the leader and looked like winning. However, Gijxsy Moth came again and just got up to beat King Brierly by a neck, with Kurapae three lengths away, third. Canopy was fourth, then came First Lap, Killadar, Courthaven, Musquil, Glenhaupo and King Tut. Southerner Takes Hurdles. Val Watch was the only withdrawal from the Manukau Hurdles, and at the close of betting best backed were Free Air (£325)-, Royal Lineage (£237) and Emancipation (£227). When the field reached the fence Thespis was showing the way to Luminary, Royal Lineage, Free Air, Catoma, Emancipation and Carlaris, and passing the stand the first time the order was Thespis and Royal Lineage (practically on terms), Emancipation, Free Air, Catoma, Luminary, Mia Stella, Carlaris and Wee Pat tailing off. Free Air dropped back a little along the back, Thespis leading across the top from Royal Lineage, Emancipation, Luminary, Free Air, Mia Stella and Catoma. Royal Lineage moved tip past the leader at this stage, and he led into the straight from Thespis, Emancipation, ilia Stella, Carlaris, Free Air and Luminary. Finishing on solidly, Royal Lineage went on to win by threequarters of a length from Emancipation, who finished well to beat Thespis by two lengths. Mia Stella was fourth, then came Free Air, Carlaris, Wee Pat, Luminary and Catoma. Rereatu Completes Double. Grand Sport was the only scratching from the Epsom Handicap, and at the close of betting the favourites were Tradesman ( £518), Gay Seton ( £452) and Rereatu ( £402). After a delay at the start, the field all got away well, 'and when they settled down Tradesman was showing the way to Greek Gold, Solomon, Rereatu and Lady Kyra. Tradesman went back fast at this stage, and Greek Gold led across the top from Solomon, Sinking Fund, Star Artist, Rereatu, British Columbia, Pin Money, Lady Kyra and Tradesman. Greek Gold was first to enter the straight, followed by Solomon, Rereatu and British Columbia. Rereatu came through in the run homo, and went on to win nicely by a length from Tradesman, who came from a long way back. Pin Money was a neck away third, and then came Gay Seton, Greek Gold, British Columbia, Solomon, Lady Kyra, King Mestor, Sinking Fund and Star Artist. Outsider Scores. Fourteen paraded for the King Edward Memorial and when the final figures were adjusted most support was accorded Kiltowyn ( £548) and Red Manfred ( £421), but the race resulted in a surprise victory for Limbohm, who carried £112 10/, while only £22 was invested on the second horse, Royal Artist. Horowhenua was first out and he led past the stands from Carfex, Red Manfred, Kiltowyn, Master Norval, Royal Artist, Baroscope and Mungatoon. The lastnamed went up fast and led along the back, attended by Carfex, Horowhenua, Baroscope and Kiltowyn ' (together). Spiral, Red Manfred, Kiltowyn and Korokio.

The race then underwent some changes, and Royal Artist was in front crossing the top, from Knight of Australia, Spiral, Baroscope, Korokio, Carfex, Kiltowyn, Mungatoon and Horowhenna. Royal Artist was first into the straight, closely followed by Spiral. Master Xorval, Baroscope, Lord Val, Kiltowyn,. Limbohni and Red Manfred.
