r SHORTAGE OF POTATOES. CHEAPER FERTILISERS. 3 ._ jj • • : 5 The shortage of Southern potatoes ; brought about by the shipping strike, has - proved most inconvenient to merchants, i. who are at their wits' cud in trying to r meet their customers' requirements. The Waimarino's cargo arrived to a bare market, as merchants only order sparingly at this time of year. Although new season's r from Pukekohe are now available, they r are pot expected to displace the demand 1 for Southern for several weeks yet. The . current rate for Southern is nominal at » £4 15/ per ton, ex the wharf, and £5 ex store. 'The ' seed potato business is virtuallyover for the season, and merchants are ' co-operating in the exchange of low stocks 1 to satisfy the limited inquiries that now I come forward for odd lots. Onions May Be Dearer. The season for Pukekohe onions is practically finished, and any stocks of these now available will not keep long without sprouting. Merchants are confining their ) attention, therefore, to Canadian new 1 season's, which are selling at about 13/6 ' per 1001b crates. The demand is good, and as orders by the next mail steamer ; are not heavy it is quite likely that higher ' prices may rule next month. Oats and Chaff. There is no change in the horse feed ' market. B Garton oats are still selling at 3/4 per bushel, and Southern chaff at ; £7 15/ per ton. Fowl Feed. ' The Southern market showed a slight ' easing last week, with quotations down a penny in some cases, but the weakness has not persisted. Stocks in the South are reported to be on the light side, and there , 6eems little prospect of lower prices for Auckland poultry-keepers this season. . Maize is coming forward more freely 1 from the East Coast, and merchants are . having no difficulty in securing require- > ments at about late rates. There is a good j consumer demand at 4/2 per bushel , through Auckland stores. Pollard and Bran. j The position in regard to pollard and bran shows no alteration. Not much ', pollard is coming over from Australia at t present, but local stocks are still sufficient j as substantial orders were placed when , the market across the Tasman was more \ favourable. i Cheaper Fertilisers. ! The drop in the price of fertilisers is " expected to bring about a substantial 1 increase in the demand for super. It is J considered that many farmers will amend ' their policy and place less reliance upon lime and more upon super in maintaining c soil fertility. f Wholesale Current Prices. ; Pollard and Bran. —Mill prices: Pollard, 3 £6 10/ per ton; bran, £5 15/ per ton.
