IN LIMERICK'S COLOURS.

SHATTER'S SURPRISE.

Carrying colours similar to those worn by the outstanding gallopers Limerick and Barrymena, Shatter caused a inild surprise by taking the Squatters' Handicap from Persian and Nord at liandwick last Monday week (says the Sydney "Morning Herald"). Shatter has thus helped to defray the cost of F. D. Jones' team, which includes Nightly and Custodian, across the Tasman. His performance was a remarkable one, in that he was a distinct last at several stages of the race, and coming into the straight he saw all his opponents head for the judge. W. Cook had no option but to bring him to the outside, and Shatter, putting in a phenomenal runs, was going right away at the judge. Only a furlong from home the race seemed well within the keeping of Persian, who had shared in the pacemaking with Confab, but although Persian maintained his rate, he could not withstand Shatter. Persian did his utmost to make a most profitable afternoon for trainer T. J. Jamieson, who had the misfortune to lose the services for the time being of the" four-year-old Limarch. Nord tackled Persian shortly after turnihg for home, but could not make any material impression on him. The favourite, Whittingham, was well beaten on his merits. He had the run of the race throughout, but did not come on where it was expected that he would show his superiority. Miss Nottava made a forward move at the half-mile, but it was short-lived; while Roxburgh did not threaten danger at any part of the race, nor did Blixten. Shatter had several admirers for large amounts.
