BUSINESS IMPROVES. GOVERNMENT STOCKS FIRM. After a quiet beginning, business on the Stock Exchange brightened up yesterday afternoon, and a good list of sales was put through at the final call. A fair number was added this morning. Values generally arc fully maintained. At this morning's call Government stocks were again firmly held, the only sellers being of 40s at £108 10/ and of 55's at £113 5/. Insurances held their latest rise, Jiew Zealands being quoted from £3 8/ to £3 9/6, and South British at buyers £4 11/6 and no sellers. There was less demand in the banking section for Australian issues, but concessions were not available from holders. Amongst local industrials Wilsons Cements were very firm, and following a sale yesterday at the new high level o£ £1 11/3 sellers withdrew, leaving buyers in this morning at £1 10/9. Quieter Noon Call. Not a great deal of business was finalised at the noon call. Bidders were content mainly to maintain quotations. Sales, generally, showed a hardening tendency. The banking section was fully repre- j sented, and was mainly unchanged. Buyers for New Zealands advanced 3d, to while a seller came forward at £2 8/6. Bidders interested in Ivauri Timbers are converging. Buyers remain at 19/9, while holders conceded Id oS £1. Totara buyers fell one penny to 6/5, while holders withdrew the same amount to 6/10. A sale was reported at 6/7. There was an inquiry again to-day in Sanfords ordinary. Buyers will give 2/6, while holders require 3d more to do business. In the mining section Mount Lyells fell away to 19/10 for buyers, while holders are steady at £1 0/3. In Government issues there was a sale of 1955, 4 per cent stock, at £112 15/. Buyers are still 5/ less than that figure, while holders still want £113 5/. The fact of many buyers and few sellers speaks for itself.
