WIDENING A PROMENADE

ISLE OF MAN SIX ACRES BIGGER. The widening of the Loch Promenade at Douglas is finished after five years. In 1928 it was decided that this front door of the Isle of Man was not big enough for the heavy traffic to and from the steamers, so for five winters 200 unemployed men of the island have been working on a new sea wall, a roadway and a promenade. To lay the foundations they had to take advantage of low tideg, even at night. Over . six acres have been reclaimed from the sea, and on some of this extra land there are now rose and ,rock gardons, ornamental shelters and a yachting pool for the children. There is no unemployment Insurance in the Isle of Man, so this and other improvement schemes have been well worth while from more than one point of view.
