BLACKMAIL GANG.
Allegations Against French Police Official. THREATS TO KILL. (Received 11 a.m.) LILLE, September 24. Police Inspector Mariani, who with Lieutenant Casanova and. seven others was arrested for alleged racketeering, carried out blackmail practices by writing to an intended victim and threatening to kill a member of his family unless 10,000 francs was deposited in a certain cafe addressed Monsieur Derrino. A tradesman thus threatened informed the police and Mariani was instructed to investigate. Money was left as bait, but the- mysterious Derrino was never caught.
