Spectacular Ceremony Held in Kandy. AMID ORIENTAL SPLENDOUR. (United F.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) {Received 12.30 p.m.) COLOMBO, September 23. In a glittering: setting' of Oriental splendour, the Duke of Gloucester restored to the Kandyan chiefs this evening the original throne and crown of the Kings of Kandy, which was removed from Ceylon by the British Administration 119 years ago. The ceremony took place in the Kandy Assembly Hall, which was decorated with rich and rare silks, creating a riot of colour. The Kandyan chiefs wore the national costume. Chief Addigar J. C. Ratwatta, senior Kandy chief, was on the dais with the Duke of Gloucester when the throne was ceremonially restored. During a four-mile State drive, the Royal procession passed beneath 14 beautiful pandals where, devil-dancers and tom-tom beaters performed.
