AMUSEMENTS.
" DUCHESS OF DANTZIC." Those who have witnessed the Mareo Operatic Society's initial offering, "The Duchess of Dantzic," at His Majesty's Theatre, comment chiefly on the remarkable enthusiasm shown by all members of the cast. Whatever its cause, the fact remains that few local productions have been done with the vim revealed in this play by every player, no matter how insignificant his role. The play itself is naturally one about which a cast could become enthusiastic, being an adaptation of a famous story, that of Madame SansGene, and having a number of popular songs which are the life and soul of the whole affair. Comedy dialogue and situations are by no means the least important factors in the success of the show, and altogether it may be said the vehicle chosen to introduce the Mareo Operatic Society to Auckland playgoers is most suitable. Its lavish costumes—an impartial authority of the local theatre said that no play, possibly excepting "New Moon," has ever been better "dressed" in Auckland— are remarkable, and its fine stage effects are insured for some £2000. The dresses and settings were mostly imported from Australia, being in the main the original ones used for Dorothy Brunton's production of four years ago. MUNICIPAL BAND. A varied programme of musical selections was given by the Auckland Municipal Band in the Zoological Park yesterday afternoon.
