COLLEGE ROAD RACE.

THE KING'S CHAMPIONSHIP. SIIELMERDINE GETS FASTEST TIME. Under ideal conditions, the thirteenth annual road race of King's College was held at Mangere. on Saturday, when 108 runners faced the starter. The winner proved to be Dunning, off the 5m mark, who was closely followed by Alpe, on 6m. The honour for fastest time went to Shelmerdine, who started from scratch and put up a great performance to do the distance in 36.50, and incidentally to run into eighth position. Punctually at 2.30 p.m. the boys, who were lined up in front of the college, were got on the mark, and live diminutive runners were sent off, to be closely followed by batches of a dozen and more at different intervals, with 14 of the college "first fifteen" on scratch. The Limit runners made the pace at the outset, and the scratch men had a lot of leeway to make up.

The course was over a distance of approximately six miles. Starting at the college, the runners traversed Massey Road to Payne's Corner, thence down Grey Avenue to Portage Road, and along the rid.ge to Self's farm, down through the quarries, and back to Hcnwood Road, and along Massey Road to finish at the college. At the first checking station at Grey Avenue, about one mile and three-quarters away, the order of runners was: Iladlow, Iluyward ii„ Brabant ii., Gray, Duignan li., Ed,ward il., Yeomans, Orr, Alpe, Jenkins. The first of the scratch men were Archdall i., Shelmerdine and Gordon. At the quarry gate (2j miles) Edward ii. and Duignan were running level, with Ilayward, Alpe, Iladlow, Yeomans, King ii., Jenkins, Wilkin and Williams following, and the three scratch men, Archdall, Shelmerdine and McGruther, coming fast At the double gates (3| miles) leaving the basin Edward and Duignan were still leading, with Alpe, Dunning, King, Jenkins, Hay«ard. Milkil], Williams and Henderson following m that order. The three scratch men were still running in the same order. At Robertson and Henwood Roads Dunning held the lead, and was running strongly, with Duignan, Edward, Alpe, King, Jenkins, Williams, Hay ward ii., Wilkin and Henderson following. The second fastest time was that of Archdall, who ran the distance in 37.50. Ihc race was a hard one, the warm weatlier testing the lads' staying powers, but nearly all the field finished the distance. Everything went without a hitch, the organisation being perfect.
