ROWING

ST. GEORGE'S CLUB,

ANNUAL REUNION PRIZE NIGHT.

The fifteenth annual smoke concert and prize giving of the St. George s Rowing Club provided a most enjoyable function in the Masonic Hall on Saturday night.

The II ev. R. G. Coats presided, and among the visitors were Mr. F. J. Sanderson (a foundation member and the first club captain), W. Winks, Mr. Hodgkinson (Otago Rowing Club), K. Aimer, V. Dunn, Captain Harrison Lee.

The Auckland Rowing Association was represented by Sir. A. C. Norden, and the sister club by Mr. C. C. Cairns (Waitemata), D. G. Stotter and C. (>. Herdman (West End), O. J. C. Mason (University). An apology for absence owing to ill-health was received from Mr. H. W. Hudson, commodore and a foundation member. In his opening remarks the Rev. It. G. Coats congratulated the members upon the great success achieved during the jubilee season, and impressed upon members the necessity to aim high in all their activities and thus maintain the prestige and high traditions of the grand old club. Mr. F. .1. Sanderson (the first captain), in responding to the toast of "Old Members," thanked the officers and members 'for the manner in which the club has been controlled. He referred to the early activities and the ambitions of these members, and noted with pride how through the long period of fifty years the high ideals of the pioneers had been maintained. He made special reference to the pleasure he enjoyed being present at the jubilee functions last season.

Captain Harrison Lee gave in a very racy and descriptive manner his reminiscences of rowing overseas, particularly in his native country Ireland. He outlined the coaching and training activies of the new members, giving much useful advice to St. George's members. To encourage the members to train properly and get fit early lie signified his intention of presenting a cup for the junior pairs to be rowed on fixed seats.

The toast list included, "The King," "St. George's Club," "Old Members," "The Auckland Itowing Association and Kindred Clubs."

Vocal items by Mr. S. Hislop, conjuring by Mr. M. O'Brien, and orchestral selections contributed to an enjoyable programme.
