BILL AMENDED.
PROTECTION OF PLANT. SCIENTIFIC BODIES ACT. As the result of representations from the Auckland Institute and War Memorial Museum, the Canterbury and the Wellington Philosophical Societies, the Native Plants Protection Bill is to be amended so that it will, in the opinion of- the bodies mentioned, better fulfil the functions for which it was introduced. Correspondence on the subject was read at a meeting yesterday of the council of the Auckland Institute. The Canterbury body liad passed resolutions, the text of which was that the bill should be deferred in order that scientific bodies should be allowed to make representations. The society considered, further, that the terms of the bill were too sweeping and that it was quite likely to hinder the study of botany. This was also materially the view of the Wellington society. A letter from the Auckland Institute to the Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Eansom, stated that the preservation of rare plant species could best be brought about by the creation of specific reserves and the keeping therefrom of browsing beasts. Finally the director, Mr. G. Arcliey, said a letter from the Minister liad contained the information that the bill had been amended, and the amendments were shown on a copy of the bill enclosed. The alteration in point .stated that nothing in the foregoing provision of that section should apply to the picking in reasonable quantities of any protected native plant which was required or intended for purposes of bona fide scientific research or nature study in schools or elsewhere, or for propagation in private or school gardens-
