+■■■■, TWO MEN IN SMALL BOAT. WHAKATANE INCIDENT. — '^ri WHAKATANE, this day. Two men had an extraordinary experience,, beinpr washed out to. sea from Tarawera River at midnight on Saturday in a Oft flat-bottomed boat. They hail no oars, but only a tea-tree pole, and drifted helplessly about for 18 bonrs in a calm sea. The occupants of the boat were Messrs. Robert Lamb (50) and James Holilen 021); both of Auckland. They endeavoured to cross the river so as to light beacons to guide a scow to port. The boat was carried over the liar and drifted seven miles to near R'urima Islands, then up the coast to the vicinity of Plate Island. Finally the tide again turned and carried the boat near to the shore. With the aid of a seat for a paddle the men readied tbe beach 14 miles from their starting point. Although they were without food or water, they were none the worse for their unenviable experience.
