CROSSING SMASH.
THREE PEOPLE INJURED. TRAIN STRIKES MOTOR CAR. (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, Monday. While passing over a level crossing about a quarter of a mile south of Pokeno railway station at 11.21 a.m. today, a five-sealer sedan motor car, driven by Mr. Richard Knight Keith, of Mangatawhiri, was struck by the southbound Rotorua express. The train struck the car at about the rear door and after carrying it for a few yards, threw it over a bank at the side of the line. Mr. Keith, the driver, and a passenger in the rear seat, Mrs. S. Glial ton, of Taupaki, received serious injuries, while a boy, Fergus C. Keith, aged 14, son of the driver, was thrown out through the front window of the ear and sustained a fractured arm. Mr. Keith and Mrs. Ohalton received attention from two doctors on tile train and were taken to the Hamilton Hospital, while the boy, after receiving attention from Dr. A. J. Begg, of Pukekohe, was conveyed to the Auckland Hospital Fortunate escapes were cxi>crieiiee<l by Mrs. Keith and Mrs. R, Raymond, who had left the car to shut a gate which the car had come through before crossing the railway line. The car, which Mr. Keith had just recently purchased, was badly damaged, but no serious damage was done to the train, which continued its journey after a delay of about twenty-five minutes. This evening Mrs. Clialton's condition was reported to be very serious, but Mr. Keith was pronounced to be out of danger.
