VAGRANCY CHARGES
MAN AND THREE WOMEN THREE SENT TO PRISON.
Three women an& a man appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court this morning on vagrancy charges. Elsie Clara Pender, aged 36, for whom Mr. Aekins appeared, pleaded not guilty to a charge deeming her to be an incorrigible rogue who habitually consorted with undesirables. After hearing the police evidence, the magistrate imposed a sentence of six months' imprisonment. Mabel Jackson (Mr. Aekins) was similarly charged. After perusing her list of previous convictions and hearing what the police had to say about her, Mr. McKean sentenced Jackson to six months' imprisonment. Leslie Roy Keoghan (34), labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge of being an incorrigible rogue, in that he begged alms in Federal Street yesterday. Inspector Edwards «said Keoghan had only been released from gaol a few days ago, when he was issued with a railway ticket to take him to a job in the countiy, but he did not take advantage of it. He was a methylated spirits addict.
A term of six months' imprisonment was imposed. "This woman has been warned by th'e police about her conduct," hut has not taken advantage of the leniency shown her," said Inspector Edwards about Christina Hughes, aged 61, charged with being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient means of support.
Mr. Aekins, appearing for the woman, eaid that she had not been in any trouble for seven years. Mr. McKean convicted and ordered her to come up for sentence within 12 njonths, if called upon and ordered her to take out a prohibition order.
