CHEAPER BREAD.
PRICE DOWN A HALF-PENNY
SALES OVEPv THE COUNTER
Without any previous announcement a prominent Auckland firm of bakers this morning reduced the price of the 21b loaf of bread from n<l to 4Jd for over the counter sales, and immediately other bilkers followed suit. A meeting of the Master Bilkers' Association will be held this evening ta consider the position. In 1928 Distributor?, Limited, a body representing the flour millers in Auckland, entered into an agreement with the Master Bilkers' Association fixing the price for local flour for six years. That agreement expired in lebruary last but was extended for six months, and'will, unless a further extension is asreed upon, expire in September next The present price of local flour is £11 12/6 per ton, and it is claimed that ill order to warrant a reduction of a haltpenny per loaf there would require to be approximately a reduction of £2 per ton on flour. Mr S S Green, secretary to the Auckland' Master Bakers' Association, said to-day that there was no chance ot a drop in tbc price of flour and as bread was now being sold at a loss it would be a disaster to the trade and .nflict suffering on the workers if price reduction became general. Many people would be put out of business and their employees out of work. Negotiations were now m process with a view to an amicable settlement of the difficulties that had arisen.
